I knew a Navy engineman with tats of a propeller on each of his butt cheeks. Don't ask how I knew that
Jennifer, I have a 'sea story' to match (and maybe surpass) yours. Some background:
In 1976, I was detted to the USS
Tulare (LKA-112), for my three-week Summer Cruise {as a brand-spanking 'seasoned' Midshipman 3/C, from the hallowed halls of 'Canoe-U' (aka, the U.S. Naval Academy)}. The mids were berthed in the Deck Dept, where the tattoo story unfolds. A BM3 (a Bosun's Mate Third Class for you civilians) came into deck berthing, and offered to show us greenears his tattoos. We all said, 'sure', and he proceeded to remove his shirt. He had a tattoo of a red rose and stem across his chest, and he stated that he didn't remember how the tattoo got there. The second tattoo is of legend. He dropped his skivvies, and, lo and behold, we were looking at a snake. Simply put, the BM3 had a tattoo of a coiled snake around his 'privates'.
To this day, I will never get a tattoo on my body...can't help but think of BM3 'Snake'.
