Ahhhh, ya that makes good sense about the use of stencils vs. decals. The smooth components that come to mind have stencils, I had a Jaguar with stenciled guard, but a Spitfire w/ the feather guard that used a decal...

Anyway, I trolled Ebay for months waiting for the red Flying Star chain guard, then a week after I give up and get the decal made that one showed up on the 'Bay the other day, Murphy's Law.

I like that Tornado.

To answer your first question, yes, the FS and Tornado were the last to use the straight bar tank. I have a feeling that they had a bunch left over, and put them on these to use them up! They were out of date by then. There was also a Deluxe Hornet that use the painted Phantom style tank. The ad you've posted is what yours would have looked like originally, with ivory painted rims. There is a lot of confusion and misinformation about the two variations of the twin bar frame. Some insist that the later one with the twin bars running all the way down to the rear axle, was exclusive to the 1 year only 62 Typhoon. The black Tornado is proof otherwise! I've seen Skippers with it too. Schwinn had likely used up the old tanks by later 61, and redesigned the frame. I have a 61 Skipper and Tornado, they both have the older style frame. -Adam

Another interesting fact: I  have been told ( More then once ) that the straight bar tank will fit the late 61 and 62 frame "it will not" I took the tank off my 59 Tornado and tried to fit it to my late 61 Tornado, not going to happen and not even close.  ;) Jeff

Interesting. That's a surprise to me Jeff. I always figured the only difference was where the twin bars ended at the rear. Now I see from your two pics that they are positioned differently, at least in the rear.
