1974 Raleigh Sports 3 speed

1974 Raleigh Sports.  One of countless millions made.  I got this one at a police auction. Someone had sliced the tires and pulled the inner tubes out. I got it for the seat but when I got it home I decided to clean it up.  I've ridden on a number of Lake Pepin Tours and ABCE rides in the Twinn Cities.  1974 was the first year for the self adjusting brake levers, a solution for a non-existing problem.

Both of my '73 Brown Sports have the non self adjusting brake levers but I still have one female small frame that has them and I couldn't give that bike away at Trexlertown.

The self adjusters always remind me of that Cowboy Junkies song, “Cheap is how I feel”.

And I'm searching all the windows for a last minute present
To prove to you that what I said was real
For something small and frail and plastic, baby
'Cause cheap is how I feel

I sold a pair of those self-adjusting levers on the 'Bay a while back. I had never seen the design before, and I have to admit it was pretty clever, but I also have to agree that, like elbow deodorant, it seemed like a solution in search of a problem.
