Can anyone tell me the difference between the Bendix 76 and 86 coaster brake hubs?

the bendix 76 has 2 brake shoes and the 86 has 4 the hub shells are the same so you can use the internals in either shell also the shells from the bendix 70 can be used also.

Great info; thanks for posting it. I did some Googling on the question when it first appeared, but turned up nothing.

If the internals are interchangeable within the same shell, is one better than the other? That is, if there's a choice of which one to use when rebuilding, would it make a difference?

As I always do, I did the same before I asked the question, and didn't get any info either.

So I would assume the 86 is just a newer version of the 76?

basically yes .  I haven't had a bendix 96 yet but I assume they are compatible also . I found this out by swapping parts when I had a bad clutch in a bendix 70 . the older red band had larger bearings so if you try to use newer internals the hub is sloopy .

It's cheaper to buy a 20 or 24 hole bendix 86 and use it to rebuild a bendix 70 then try to buy nos parts. the 70 has a nicer shell.

So what’s the difference between a Red Band hub and Red Band 2 hub? I’m a little confused right now.
Thanks,
Marshall

Here are the differences in the RB hubs from Sutherland's repair manual.
