I would like to know what the correct rear wheel for My Stingray would be. I have an April 64 Standard. Thanks.

According to the 1964 spec sheet:

http://www.trfindley.com/flschwinn_1961_1970/1964dlr_Stingray_specs.html

...the rear rim manufacturer's part number was 3923, which maps to Schwinn part number 80 049, which is a chrome, 36-hole S-2 rim.

Just to be complete, the front is listed as 3921, which maps to 80 137, a chrome, 28-hole S-7 rim.

For 64' Stingray you need a double knurled center stamped S2 28 hole rear.

Welll... here's the photo of the standard Sting-Ray from the 1964 specifications book:

http://www.trfindley.com/flschwinn_1961_1970/1964dlr_Stingray.html

If you count the spokes in the photo, you'll see that there are 36 in the back and 28 in the front.

Here's one from the 1964 catalog and only the deluxe has the 36 spoke.

A little more detail on the rear rim of a 1964 Stingray.

It was another mid-year change as Schwinn was known to do.

The 36 spoke rear wheel was used into Aug. of 64.

The 28 spoke rear wheel started in Sept. of 64 and continued for the following years.

BTW, the Copper Deluxe and the Lime Standard "both" have the 36 spoke rear wheel on the last page of that catalog - as they should!

I have to say that this is one of the more detail-oriented threads we've had in a while...

Yep. The bike is currently in pieces, I'm doing a little maintenance while I'm waiting for my reupholstered Solo Polo to arrive. Here's a couple of shots of it last Summer when I first got it cleaned up and back on the road. The serial number is C453799.

Here's how it looked when I found it on Craigslist:

It finally occurred to me to go and look at the 1965 specs as well, and those do confirm that by 1965, the rear wheel had been changed to a 28-hole version (#3920, Schwinn part number 80 045). You can see the obvious visual difference in the photo, where the 1965 front and rear wheels match better than the 1964, because they now have the same spoke count.

Yup. see reference pic. (not mine...I wish!)
