HELLO
« on: September 25, 2016, 03:51:31 PM »
Hello folks. I just signed up to the forum. I worked at a Schwinn dealer called Aviation Cyclery in the late 70's and early 80's in Manhattan Beach, California. This was my first job working for a friend of the family. My favorite thing was building custom beach cruisers and mountain bikes back in the day. I recently found this 1982 Schwinn Sidewinder on Craigslist in my local area, and I have plans to restore it as a riding bike. It was in great shape. I put some air in the tires, some lube on the chain, and it was in full riding condition again!

I also have the paper certificate framed and on my wall that they gave me also. I will post a pic of that some other time.

The Sidewinder looks to be all original, (except for the Jim Blackburn rack) it just needs a good cleaning, and a new pair of grips.

Thanks for the warm welcome folks! In my day of working at the shop, I built lots of custom beach cruisers, and MTB. I would build them, ride them, then sell them. It was lots of fun. Back then I never thought MTB would evolve into what it is today! When I was riding the fire roads of the Malibu hills, we did it just because it was FUN to do, just like the gang up in Marin County.

I stopped working at the shop shortly after the owner sold the place, so my access for building bikes ended as I moved on to another profession. I sold all of my bikes except for one custom MTB I built for myself. It was built on a Champion frame, with all the best parts available at the time. I owned that bike for about 30 years, then finally parted it out and sold it when I found out how much all the "OLD SCHOOL" parts were going for............LOL

Attached is a pic of myself on that custom bike (in one of it's many configurations) at a bike race in Manhattan Beach in 79 or 80?

So after being without a bike for a few years, I saw a pic of a Fatbike online, and just had to have one! So 3 years ago, I purchased a Norco Fat Bike, and got back into riding. Now, I have gotten the bug for collecting, and restoring some of the old Chicago Schwinns from the 70's & 80's. The Sidewinder I recently acquired is the start of that. See attached pic.

Also, here is my favorite keepsake from working at the shop. My Schwinn clock. This clock was hung on the wall of the shop when it opened in the early 60's. When I left the shop, I asked the new owner if I could buy it from them, and they sold it to me. This clock has hung on the wall of every place that I have live since the day I acquired it. It is one item I will never part with!

Great clock, Randall. I would hang onto that too! Though it is probably worth a small fortune today!

I am enjoying the pics too!

I often thought of selling the clock over the years, but just couldn't do it.

There is one on Ebay right now for anyone interested...........LOL

Totally groovy clock, Randall. Maybe my Trek clock will be worth $813 one day, you think? Gotta show you mine!

When someone asks how many bikes I have, I now say, "Oh, over thirty" and leave it at that.

To me, my clock is worth way more than that sellers asking price because of the history, and sentimental value of my clock being in the shop I worked at......! And as with everything else in life, things are worth whatever anyone is willing to pay for it.

And here I am with my little sister on our first bikes. My first bike was a Royce Union, and not a Schwinn unfortunately.
