Just finished - blue 1971 Schwinn Stingray Fastback 3 speed
« on: April 17, 2016, 09:29:13 AM »
This was a very nice bike to start with.  It cleaned up extremely well.  The seat is perfect.  3 speed Stik Shift bikes are my favorites

Thanks

Bob

Nice bike and great pictures. What are you using to take and prepare your photos? --Ron

Hi Ron:

The camera I'm using is a 10 year old Canon PowerShot A560 hand-held digital camera (I took the pics of the camera with my iPhone 5s).

The camera has a fairly big screen on it, so you can get a good feel for what the end product looks like.  It has a 4x zoom for close-up photos which is nice.  I use the portrait setting and leave the auto-zoom and focus features on (the focus setting is the little flower icon).

I found that leaving the flash on helps the autofocus feature find a good reference point for focusing.

In poor lighting, I use the nighttime setting, which over exposes the picture slightly to compensate for the lack of sufficient ambient light.  That seems to work best for indoor photos at a distance.

Thanks

Bob

Thanks Bob. I'll experiment with similar settings on my Nikon. Your shots just seem to show a lot of detail. --Ron

Very sharp! What years were the 3 speeds available? Do you know how the gearing is compared to the 5 speeds?

Stik Shift three speed bikes first appeared in August of 1966, and lasted until very early January in 1974.  The gear range was 39-low, 51-normal, and 68 - high, used with a 14 tooth rear cog in the standard Stingray.  I've seen reference to the following for 3 speed Sturmey Archer hubs:

Low gear - reduction of 25%
Normal Gear - direct drive
High gear - Increase of 33.5%

The best thing about three speeds is that there is no derailleur, so the chains don't slip off of the crank!

Thanks

Bob
