Garmin Varia Bike Radar

My friend who owns the LBS was talking about this today. The sales rep was in to do a demo. Looks pretty cool!

Well, I broke down and bought one of these systems recently and finally got to try it out this evening on a cruise around town. Seemed to work pretty well, though I did have a couple of false readings. One was when a car turned out from a side road just after I passed him. The sensor did not pick him up. Not a real problem in that case, as I saw the car waiting to pull out.

Seems to work best with a car approaching directly from behind. Claims to begin sensing at about 150 yards. I would say that was pretty close. I did a couple of dry runs waiting on the sidewalk for cars to approach. No problem registering cars and trucks. I did not get passed by any motorcycles, so that will have to be determined later. No bicycles from behind either, but I'm not sure it will register those, unless it was the whole peloton!

Batteries are supposed to last for five hours. I was only out for 45 minutes, so no problem there. Mounting the units was not difficult. I did not use the seat post mount, instead I used one of the extra supplied bar mounts to affix to the saddle bag. If you use a bag and your saddle height is significant, you won't need to do that. They actually give you enough mounts to do two bikes if you set them up properly. Then you can just swap the receiver and display units from one bike to another.

One additional thing.......it is still a good idea to have a mirror of some kind unless you are adept at peeking behind you.

Batteries are supposed to last for five hours.

Jeez... cumulatively, that's not much, if you're any kind of a frequent rider. Exactly how many batteries are involved? Does the range decrease as the batteries weaken? Does it give you a battery strength indicator?

The batteries are USB-rechargeable and there is an indicator on the display unit that monitors both the sensor and display battery strength. I'm going to keep running this on the initial charge until it tells me to recharge, just to see how long it lasts.

Also meant to mention that this unit works well when you are approached from behind by multiple vehicles. The display will let you know that there are more than one.

I also just got the Varia system It also impressed me.  I have a Time Trial coming up in a week that is on a crappy road and is an open course.  I am planning on using it to try to run on the better part of the road and only move over when cars are approaching.  (the National Senior Games...http://www.nsga.com  The MO state games are next weekend.  If I finish in the top 4... I will qualify for the 2017 National games.)  The system also works with the Garmin Edge 520 and 810.  My wife is eager to use it on the Road tandem.  I am a Garmin dealer and I feel that these will be a big seller. As far as the time.... 5 hours... That is REALLY close for a Century for me... I have a remote battery I could plug into the tail light... Radar part... and give it a charge if need be.  My head unit Edge 520 gets awesome battery life.

Pretty cool.
I have the Edge 200. I love it and feel like it is
the best accessory that I have ever bought.
Keep in mind that I consider myself to be a total
amateur.

I'm afraid that if I had an additional $300 to spend
I would go buy another Schwinn of some sort.   ::)

Like your edge...  This can move from bike to bike..... I ride road bikes a lot.... 6,000 miles last year.... When I was telling my wife about it when I first saw it in real life...I was about 10 seconds into the "sales pitch" to her and she said.... GET IT!    ;D

Since I have a titanium plate and six drywall screws holding my neck together I am no longer able to "peek" behind me. I ride a lot on roads with less than safe areas and this would be a great help. Will look into it. Thanks for sharing.

Update: ran this for another hour and 20 minutes tonight. It has not been recharged since my initial ride 16 days ago, and was not used during that time. Still working great. I'm still waiting for a motorcycle to approach me from behind (they were coming the other way tonight) to see how it works with those. I had multiple vehicles approach at the same time a few times and it let me know that with no problem.

I used mine at the MO Senior Games on my TT bike....  It worked great... This was an open source.. (cars were coming up behind me... although not that many)  I saw them on my Garmin 520 and never looked back to adjust where I rode during the race...  There was one section that riding near the Yellow line was the only smooth part.  I ended up getting 3rd on the 10K and the 5K in my age group... and 5th overall in all age groups.  I am impressed with it!

Congratulations on your results, Don! Very impressive!

With the Garmin 520, do you get an audio beep when a car approaches from behind? I have only visual warning with the Varia bundle package I have. I think having the audio alert would be a big plus.

Yes I do.... (get the beep)  Both with the 520 and 810.... For me it is a big plus.  When I first stocked this I was not sure which way I would like it better.  I have a customer that is looking at the system.  I am going to sell him my head unit with the tail piece.... He know that we have used the radar head unit for 2 rides.  Right now Terry is using the the head unit with her Magellan Mio on one tandem and a Garmin 500 on the other.  We are going to sell the Mio and the 500 and get something else... Most likely another 810.  Then she can do maps also. :)  Being a Garmin dealer helps this along a bit. ;)

Got two to three more hours in this week, still on original charge and after sitting for five days. I'm tempted to recharge it, but I want to see how long it goes on one charge.

I did have a motorcycle approach me last evening, and it detected that perfectly.

Finally died on last night's ride, after about 30 minutes. Total of about six hours of usage time, but not recharged since the initial one over two months ago.

It did a lot of sitting around, so not a very conclusive test. I charged it again today and I'll try to string some rides together to get a better idea.
