2 1972 Raleigh Sports
« on: April 28, 2014, 03:42:57 AM »
Picked these up on Sunday. The Ladies model needs a rear wheel and B-72 saddle. Drove about 40 miles each way. The man selling them belongs to my firearms forum and has a gunsmith shop on the property. The Father in law stopped out in the garage and we talked about vacations in Ocean City NJ. He goes there too and this year the grand kids are going with him and Grandma. Most gun people are not bicycle people. A completely different culture.

Nice score, Jennifer!

Glad you were able to get them both. Looks like they may have been together for some time.

Yep, now I have 5 Raleigh bikes, 2 Peugeots, Schwinns too numerous to count (about 25), a Bridgestone and a Mongoose. These bikes had no seat tube binder bolts, the women's model is missing the seat, the rear wheel is wrong and not good for riding. The fenders are in very good shape, the paint on both is in very good shape. All the chrome has been kept clean and rust free. The hubs sound a little loud like they need some 10/40 but have distinctive and clean clicks. The chains have been kept lubed. The cranks still have the "R" nuts on the cotters and the cranks have been serviced a few times since they were new. Cables are good and brakes are good. The shifters are in good shape. The chain guards have no marks on them. I may have to invest in some Tweed ;)

Indeed for the Tweed!  Sounds like someone has a Lake Pepin ride or similiar in their future.

belongs to my firearms forum

What forum is that? Guns, old bikes and next you are going tell us that you're a old car fanatic. Are you really a woman? this just seems too good to be true! I definitely had a thing for Morticia Addams, although it was Lily Munster that had my heart.

Sorry, not interested in the current fad of retromod vintage car restorations. I worked on many of those muscle cars back in the day and just not interested anymore. I was a Cadillac/ Rolls Royce mechanic in the late 70's into the 80's. I wouldn't mind having an original '74-76 Eldo convertible to cruise in after I retire.

Having this discussion means we are either old, me, or watched too much cable as a child. Morticia!

Another problem is that the younger generations will be far less prosperous with less disposable income.

I agree. I have hired young people who had to be forcibly told to put their phones down and go to work. I paid way above minimum and it was an insult to them that I wanted them to work with both of their hands. having a decent work ethic is no longer a priority with some young folks. That being said, I have worked with some who were willing to learn and did good work.

That piece of the paint looks really nice. I think the ladies bike will clean up that nice. I finally got a B-72 saddle for the ladies bike and the correct rear rim. I need the seat binder bolts with the red background and white R in the middle. I put nice bright shiny new nuts on the binder bolts and they almost good. Still looking though.
