How to remove the pedals on a 1939 Schwinn Hollywood?
« on: April 18, 2012, 03:48:24 PM »
I'm trying to get my 1939 Schwinn Hollywood packed and ready to ship but I can't figure out how to get the pedals off so it will fit in the shipping box. Can anyone help me? By the way, I finally did locate the serial number on this bike and it's Y79831. Anyone care to fill me in on that? I say it's a 1939 Hollywood because that seemed to be the general consensus view when I had it posted on here before. Anyway, I need to get those pedals off it ASAP, so please help me out! Thanks.

looks like the pedal help is done.as far as the serial number, pre war and pre 48 records were lost in a factory fire in late 48.a few have attempted to rebuild the serial records from known bikes.
rec,who is a member here, has had a fair amount of success decoding and recording the numbers.maybe he can chime in and offer his expertise.

Great line in the movie Joe Kidd said by Luis Chama " One day there was a fire " as he burns the property deeds.

Well perhaps that is the problem I'm having then, I don't have a wrench that will fit in between the crank arm and the pedal to grab onto the shoulder and turn it. Every wrench I have is too wide. Any suggestions on where I can find one the right size? Also, I knew about the factory fire and the lost serial numbers, I just thought maybe someone would have an idea maybe. I pretty much know it's either a '38 or '39 Hollywood. It's already been sold, so I was just curious really. Thanks for the help everyone! I really appreciate it!

Okay, from all the pedal wrench info I could find online, the standard size seems to be 15mm, but that only refers to the opening on the wrench, not the width of the jaws. I got a 15mm combination wrench but the jaws are still too wide to fit in the space! AAAARRRRGGGHH! The space in question is less than 1/4" wide, very tight! I need to find a wrench that will fit in there ASAP! Help folks! Thanks.

i've ground down thicker wrenches to fit,or your local bike shop might have one for sale or even remove the pedals for you.a 9/16 or 15mm should work.

Yes, the cone wrench is what you need. On more "modern" bikes it's 15mm. I imagine yours is 9/16" but either should work. Here's what it should look like; I just picked this one up at a flea market for $1 as a backup to my Park.

1982 Schwinn Continental 24"

I got tired of fighting with pedals so I picked up a parktool made in USA pedal wrench PW-3, haven't had a problem sense but if I get one that is really stuck I bust out the fire wrench for some added persuasion ;D

I had to use the fire wrench on my Cycle Truck. :o

Just remember that when you unscrew the pedals you will always be pulling
against the coaster brake.

I always remember that chainguard side is standard thread. Other side is reverse threads. I also have the same park tool that Jeff showed. It is perfect for the job. Chris
Thank goodness for this forum. I'd be lost without it.

Thanks for all the helpful info, but being as I was pressed for time I simply went to my local Home Depot and bought a set of combination wrenches that were not as thick and they worked like a charm! Pedals came off with no trouble at all. Now all I have to do is get the box strapped up and sent on it's way. Thanks again all. See you all again the next time I find a gem at a sale!
