With realistic chuffing sound.

On a related note, the Virginia Museum of Transportation is starting a study group to see the feasability and cost of operating the N&W 611 again.  *fingers crossed*

Nice video Mactire. I see how they got that thing to go so fast. Those wheels and connecting rods were made for speed. See how close the connecting rods are to the centerline of the axle and how they are hooked up to a single expansion piston. There's a lot less motion in those connecting rods then there would be for high leverage locos that haul heavey freight. It would probably have some trouble hauling heavyweight cars up a grade but it appears it would fly like the wind with those cars. Nice scenery too. I'm always amazed at how much difference there is in the noise level with the welded rail compared to the jointed (stick) rail. If they had the welded rail and low expansion ties back then they would have been going a lot faster than 100mph. That is a very cool loco. Thanks for posting it. 8)

That was a pretty awesome video Mactire.  Jennifer -- thanks for the explanation.

How cool would it be to be out riding in that countryside and see that thing go by?

Thanks for posting it.

There was a bit on the news today about a book written by a former steward on the Frisco passenger trains that used to run though Springfield, MO.

I remember the trip I took to my maternal grandmother's on the train and still miss the old depot that our city decided to tear down years ago.

Great trip through Ireland by train. Semaphore wayside signals, hand thrown interlocking switches, smoking cars, interspersed with welded rail and overhead catenary along with a steam excursion at the end. That was one of the best videos I've seen in some time. Even though my all my ancestors from both sides boarded ships to come here back in the late 1840's into the 1850's I've never been to Ireland. I've been in most of the countries in Europe except Ireland. Maybe some day. Thanks for the video Mactire!
