My first "vintage" Schwinn; 1963 Superior
« on: February 19, 2012, 07:37:17 PM »
Using a lot of knowledge and insight gained on this forum I just purchased my first "vintage" Schwinn, a 1963 Schwinn Superior. Can someone with the wherewithal post a pic and/or provide the correct part numbers for the front derailleur, pedals, and brake lever hoods? They're the only non-original parts on it and I'd like to restore it to as original condition as possible. Thanks!

Wow -- heck of a find!

Eric Amlie is our Superior expert in residence (though I'm sure there are others).

Help will be along soon.

Congrats!

Bob

Eric and others were very supportive in helping me determine the originality and condition factors of the purchase. I've got a lot to learn!

Congrats again!

You have a quite rare bike there.

Attached are 3 different pics of the original front derailleur.

I don't have pics of the brake levers or the pedals(which are Atoms) but I know other members have those pics, and hopefully they will chime in here with them.

My 61 Continental has the Atom pedals. Here is the post with a pic.

If no one comes forward with pics of the brake levers, I'll get pics of a set with the color matched covers when I go see my parts guy. He has a very nice Terra Cotta 63.

I noticed that that bike has the rear dropout with the cutout.  It must be the earlier ones that had the solid dropout.

I've a couple of pics of 62's. One has the solid and one has the cutout. I'm assuming the change came about in '62 sometime. Now the big question: What's the reason for it?

The cutout is just removing unnecessary material to make it lighter.

Seriously? On a bike with an Ashtabula? I just assumed it was a design feature or something that aided in production.

No kidding!

I've got a couple of those triple cranks laying around and it's amazing how heavy they are.

On my '62 Violet Superior I replaced it with TA Pro 5 vis(cyclotouriste) 32/45/50 crankset.
