« on: November 13, 2011, 11:06:10 PM »
is there a source for id'ing proper pedals for the different years and models?i've been holding onto a set of pedals for a bike i'm going to restore and just found out they were the wrong year :'( any pictures would be really helpful.

Cool Thread Brian and should bring in some great info. I will start with pictures I already have.

First picture are late 1967 to 1970 standard pedals.

Second picture are late 66 through 67 same as picture above but no stars, standard pedals.

Third picture are 1960 to 1965 (Large Cap) Deluxe bow pedals.

Forth I think started in around 1953 on Heavy weight Jaguar and one or two light weight models and went to 1959. (Large Cap) Deluxe bow pedals.

Fifth picture is 1966 (Small cap) Deluxe Bow pedals

More pedal pictures  :).

First picture is from around 1964 65 and I have seen a few very similar variations of this style but always seem to be around these years and mostly on the smaller bikes like Stingrays.

Second picture is around 1959 into 1962, they have a removable cap like the early Bow pedals, these are typically found on models like Panther, Debutant, Hornet, Speedster. I guess you could call them the Deluxe standard pedal of this time period.

Third picture is a standard pedal that came on many models from around 1962 up to around 1966.

Forth and fifth pictures (1971) are the first schwinn reflector pedals, the added reflector started in 1971 and were small. first run reflectors were clear but were changed quickly to amber. In 1972 the reflectors were much larger.

First picture is of 1972 73 and up stingrays, my 76 5 speed stingray also had them. I think that aggressive block style is called waffle block.

Second picture are called rat trap pedals used on light weights and fast back stingrays. The early 66 rat trap pedals had a U on the cap and (I think) starting around 67 the Schwinn logo was added. I am not sure on the time line with these pedals.

Third picture are of Atom pedals that came on more high end light weights. I also am not sure on time line with these. 1959 up?

I have that style Atoms on my 61 Continental and I think they quit using them in 71 or 72  and used the later 440's.
Too many to list....

Wow! Good stuff folks.  Thanks for the info.  Like Brian, I play mostly with the 40's-50's Ballooners and would appreciate any pedal info for that era.

after going over the findley catalogs,it would seem gt is right.looks like the first year for block pedals on fastbacks is 72.all the pics show bow pedals prior to that, with the exception of the first year of fastbacks, which were rat trap.maybe even 67,but not sure.your pedals are probably correct for a 70 stingray.

If you want to get technical, the bows just like the block pedals in 67 did not have the Schwinn Approved with the stars around the outer edge of the non removable cap so in that aspect 67 would also be a one year only pedal. Other then the cap 67 would be the same as 68,69 and 70. Here is a shot of 68 to 70 bow cap and if you compare them to the 67 pedals GT posted you can see the difference.  :) Jeff

Great to see this pedal chart was made into a sticky.
